Growing up between Suzhou, China and various parts of the US, Annie Ning is a filmmaker whose work explores the clashing of cultural and personal perspectives in places of convergence between the strange, funny, and deeply absurd.

Annie holds a B.A. in Film and English from Wesleyan University and an M.F.A. in Directing and Screenwriting from Columbia University. She is currently based in NY, where she is an Adjunct Professor of Screenwriting at Columbia.

Her short film Invasive Species premiered at Palm Springs before screening at Slamdance, Raindance and beyond, receiving Best Narrative Short at the San Diego Asian Film Festival in 2023. It has also been featured on Staff Pick Premieres, NOWNESS Asia, and Short of the Week. Invasive Species will be exhibited as a single-channel video installation in a group exhibition (Whispers Towards the Outside) at the Daegu Art Museum in South Korea, opening in July 2026.

Her most recent project was an inaugural recipient of the Vimeo Short Film Grant by Nikon | RED. Additionally, she co-wrote the short film Nikola, Nikola with director Leon Ristov, which was recognized by the Sundance Institute Ignite Fellowship in 2025.

She has produced and edited work for clients such as Vogue China, Tory Burch, EDAS, & Eny Lee Parker. She was a 2020 Fellow at the Creative Visions Foundation Women Excel Project, & the BAVC Serial Storyteller Program.

In 2024, she was named one of Vimeo’s Breakout Creators of the Year and Filmmaker Magazine’s 25 New Faces of Independent Film. She is currently developing the screenplay for her debut feature, Man Made Lake.
